THE POPLITEUS MUSCLE
[Knee-pain 🗝 muscle]
The popliteus is a fairly small muscle located behind the knee. It runs from the lateral side of the femur (lateral meniscus/joint capsule) to the medial side of the tibia, lying deep beneath the calf muscle. Its role is to unlock the knee just after the heel touches the ground when you are walking or running. It also has an important role when running downhill as it assists the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in decelerating the femur and preventing its sliding forward on the tibia.
Because of its role in assisting the PCL on downhills, runners can start developing symptoms after an abnormally long hill-training session. People with unstable knees (torn ligaments, torn meniscus, arthritis…) are also prone to develop a popliteus problem because of its important role in stabilizing the knee.
Working with prof. athletes, in my case tennis players, who are changing surfaces a lot, the popliteus is a very important structure to look at especially if the athlete suddenly suffers from knee problems after starting to train on a different surface!
The popliteus muscle is kind of a 🗝 muscle, if there are any irritations inside or outside the knee happening the popliteus usually reacts with tightness and trigger points which can lead to pain of the knee.
Popliteus muscle problems remain under-diagnosed to this day, meaning that a lot of runners suffer from it without knowing. Its small role in gait function and its deep location make it unsuspected and underestimated by a lot of health professionals. Also its symptoms are strangely very similar to those of a torn collateral ligament, a torn meniscus or a Patellofemoral Syndrome. So if you have been experiencing knee pain and it does not seem to heal, ask your health professional about the popliteus.
Popliteus muscle problems simply appear as tendonitis, muscle tightness or trigger points so it should be treated the same way meaning anti-inflammatory- and physio treatment. Especially with fascial and trigger point treatments I experienced very good results! Popliteus muscle problems are fairly easy to treat and respond well to treatment, so keep your 👀 open! QUADRATUS LUMBORUM MUSCLE (QL) - HOW DAILY HABITS CAN CHANGE POSTURE
.
If you doesn’t work on biomechanical dysfunction and muscle imbalance properly it can force pain situations in your body up- or downstream through an so-called ascending or descending kinematic chain⛓.
.
Consider the positions you are in throughout the day, those are your habits and your body will adapt to them! Here is a great take on this by @borisrehab:
.
How putting all your bodyweight on one leg can screw up your back?
.
I always emphasize to patients about knowing how to feel a connection with their feet to the ground (how do you ground yourself down like a sturdy) - as you can see, if you’re the type of person who loves to just sag your pelvis off to one side and totally load up one leg like a crutch when standing, the long term issues can lead to all these different things happening upstream - all of a sudden 3 months later all you can complain about is this nagging back issue that seems to be an annoyance to resolve!
.
You keep away at the site of pain, forgetting to address and adjust and bring awareness to what the feet are doing. If your hip and your feet aren’t communicating, they’re not going to want to work in synchronization to create a nice stable base for your torso, chest, upper back, neck, shoulders and head to sit nicely on 🔝 of. Solution? Learn to stand still. If you don’t want to, then learn to play hot potato (constantly move, don’t let these dysfunctional patterns solidify)!
.
If you want to know more about this kind of techniques and how I provide specialist support for professional athletes on @ATPWorldTour and @DavisCupTennis team competition you are welcome to join the upcoming course, I will be teaching in Taipei/Taiwan at 1st-2nd of December 2018 at @Sportsline.

Herbal sleep aids can, for many people, be a good choice for treating insomnia and sleep difficulties naturally.
In more recent years, studies have shown that some medicinal herbs and certain combinations of natural herbs can act as natural sleep aids and offer similar or the same calming effects as prescription drugs and sometimes eliminate the need for taking synthetic medication altogether.
Synthetic medications for insomnia are very useful but can come with somewhat bothersome side effects like addiction and influence the natural sleep rhythms in a negative manner if taken over a long period.
Therefore it is good to know that there are “green sleeping pills” that can be an alternative to what the doctor has to prescribe.
In many cases, it is essential to view herbal remedies for insomnia as a holistic approach where medicinal herbs are only a part of the overall treatment and management of this condition.

Great post by @optimize.physiotherapy on how important it is to MOVE and LOAD to recover faster from an injury! 🔑
↘️
Rest is important when we are rehabbing an injury or are in pain. Rest is a broad term however, and does not mean that we should avoid movement at all costs.
➡️ Rehab of any musculoskeletal injury requires movement. Not only movement at the specific Injured area, but overall human movement must be restored as quickly as possible.
🔹 Yes, tissue sometimes needs time to heal (especially when dealing with surgeries, tears, bone breaks etc.). We must respect that. But this does not mean that we should restrict other forms of movement that don’t negatively hinder healing. In most cases, introducing load and movement as soon as possible after an injury or while in pain yields the best results.
🔑 Complete rest is rarely the answer. Relative rest and working around injuries is a much better solution…doing as much as you can while still respecting tissue tolerance.
❌ Examples:
1️⃣ Acute low back pain.
➖ I have had many clients come to me who have said that they literally laid in bed for days following a back injury. Yes, pain levels can be extreme at times, but introducing movement (even at the areas above and below the injury) and getting the body gradually moving is VERY important for recovery. It can be counterintuitive, but putting someone though a mobility session who is in acute pain can quickly chip the pain down to a fraction of what it was (neurologically).
2️⃣ Knee and hip replacement surgeries.
These major surgeries used to mandate 1 or more FULL weeks of bed rest in the hospital. Now, doctors enforce that patients get up and moving hours after the surgery and patients will often get out of the hospital in 1-2 days, walking on their own (with a gait aid of course).
✅ Whether a major or minor MSK injury, movement reintroduction is the answer.

The moon has been a magickal presence for thousands and thousands of years. Ancestors of multiple cultures believed it had some spiritual significance. Science has helped us understand the moon and it’s effect on Earth, and astronauts who have visited the moon returned having a more spiritual connection, exploring religious or metaphysical beliefs more in depth.
There are numerous spells you can perform while under the different phases of the moon. One simple ritual can be done to perform all the spells listed here by taking a small white candle to the window and gazing at the moon. Say your wish aloud and with feeling, then leave the candle to burn down and extinguish itself. (Remember to never leave a lit candle near a window unattended completely, or place it near a curtain).

The moon and its phases were once theorized to interfere with our internal chemistry by exerting gravitational forces on our bodies, or that the moon’s gravitational fields caused electrical particles to fall down to Earth further interfering with the function of the brain. Many scientific studies have attempted to disprove this notion, as well as invalidating the belief that crimes and mental instability (such as lunatic) increased during full moons. The full moon does not have any negative connotations in the magickal world, it is just considered a very powerful time of the month. Fridays that fall on full moons, for example, are perfect days for casing love spells. If you try to cast a love spell during any other moon phase, it doesn’t mean it won’t work, but the results could take longer.
There are lots of other spells that can be cast during the benefit of a full moon also:

During the waxing moon, witches like to cast spells for improving situations or getting things going if they have been stuck for a while. This is a good phase of the moon to help kick-start your life. The following spells are fast-acting during a waxing moon:
The waning moon is perfect to cast spells for getting ride of negative energies that sometimes hang over your life. If you cast a spell during this moon phase, you will gain the power to take control again, strengthen weak areas, and become more assertive in actions. Cast spells during a waning moon for:
This lunar experience is appropriate for just about any spell. The new moon phase surrounds us with positive energy and can be a catalyst for immediate change. Transitions in life happen naturally around a new moon phase anyway, such as new jobs or births. To revolutionize your life during this time, cast spells for:

Women and the Moon
In many early religions, the moon was worshipped as a goddess, and it has always been seen as a feminine symbol. The moon orbits at a distance of approximately 238,855 miles from Earth, and takes about 28 days to complete its orbit. In an interesting comparison, the amount of time between female menstrual cycles is the same amount of days.
Our demeanor changes depending on what the moon is doing. If you are interested in studying your own changes, keep a Book of Shadows about how you feel during each passing phase. Certain situations can naturally occur during certain phases, also. Animals may be affected by the full moon phase, and can become a bit more rambunctious. So if you’re a witch with felines, keep catnip at hand.

During the dark moon, when the face of the moon is hidden, it is also known as the “dead” moon. It takes place precisely three days before a new moon, and is considered to be the most magickal and potent of all the phases. Many individuals who partake in black magick do so during this time. People using dark magick can influence any spells or rituals that you may be performing. Their collective power can cause cosmic havoc: our spells may become confused or simply not work at all. It is advised to be experienced wand wavers to attempt rituals at this time.
